Diary Entry: Canrail journey planning Topic: Trans-Canada VIA Dec'03
Over the last week, I was planning my trans-canada continantal rail journey for my coming vacation. My plan was purchasing a canrail ($465) pass to go from Vancouver, en-route to winnepeg and churchill, then continue on the "Canadian", transfer to the "Ocean" to get to Hanifax, side-track to Gaspe, then to Quebec city, Montreal, Ottawa, and finally Toronto and Niagara Fall via the "Corridor". However, I cannot put that into 12 to 15 (with 3-day extension) calender days. And either upgrading the pass to North American pass ($699) or purchasing extra Corridor pass ($250)is out of my budget. I am going to broke.!
It would be really nice to be at Niagara Fall on Nov 23, 2003 because the DisneyLand team will perform over the lighthen Niagara Fall!! There will be firework too (organised by Niagara-on-the-lake). I want to see the Christmas lightings of the East Canada cities as well.
Nevertheless, my rail plan won't fit in as I start my holiday on Nov 22. So I search for a flying option. Again it will cost $384 if I fly in and out from Toronto (jet2go), and cost $450 if I fly in Toronto and out Montreal.
I am still deciding... I might opt for my very original plan, touring around the sunshine coast and Vancouver Island during my first two weeks of vacation, and learn skiiing in my third week. Let's see.

Real Jewel of Rockies Mountains #2 -- Lakes Topic: Moose West Pass- Oct 2003
There are two emerald lake in Rockies Mountain. One is Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Alberta, which was once called Emerald Lake. Another one is the Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, BC. Uncle Paul prefers Lake Louise, which is much closer to his home (Calgary). He always bring visitors up here. Lake Louise has different view under sunnny and rainy weathers. All are beautiful, he said. Plus, he has the honey moon vacation with Auntie Jeanie then. Our tourist guide once said different vieww cost differently. The most beautiful one cost 10 million dollars. However, out of our four visits to Lake Louise, we were not that lucky to have the expensive view. The smoke from the fire, and the cloud blocked our view in summer and fall respectively.
On the other hand, we are really amazed by the reflections of snowly peak, clouds, blue sky, and the lodge on Emerald Peak. We killed rolls of our films! We were glad that we did that. Gus, on another bus, arrived merald Lake one week before we did, did not catch that. The cloudy and windy weather made the lake looked dull.

Diary Entry
Today is Memorial Day. But most stores are opened for business including Costco.
Calgary Panorama Mania Topic: Moose West Pass- Oct 2003
Our stay at Calgary was the most ecomonic because we stayed and ate free at Uncle Paul's home. The food we loved the best at his home were honey ham (Friday only), canned fish (all days), and steamed rice (all day)(in order) . Uncle Paul kept saying Calgary was null to see. and in fact all except five tourist attractions were closed for the season (last day was Thanksgiving day). We did managed to tour around via C-train (light rail transit). We picked up a transit map from the Malbourne Station for free (Uncle Paul did not know it's free and always dare to ask for it). We stopped every station stop on all three line of C-train. Finally in our second last day at Calgary my cousin Joycelyn remind Uncle Paul of a good viewpoint to take picture of downtown Calgary. We were glad we did!
Calgary is a new city. The public transit network is well designed and developed. We travelled very easiler on the C-train (light rail transit), which started operating from 1980. We actually reach every stop on the line. One particular thing that we found it interesting was its doors opened by request. You have to push button to open it, or it close d for ever.
The landscape of Calgary is very flat. That makes her downtown very standout from whatever view you are. Uncle Paul took us both the north and the south bank of downtown to take th e Downtown Panorama. ------------- Below are random links of my calgary photos

Tips: Time to Visit Topic: Moose West Pass- Oct 2003
In my opinion, fall is the best time to visit the Rockies. There are changing color of vegetation and much more snow on the mountains.
However, beware that there is a cut-off date when many attractions and tours in the Rockies will be closed for the rest of the year.
Example of those are closed in low season are - Jasper Tramway - Lake Louise Shuttle - Moraine Lake - Brewster's Calgary Day tour
Guess what date is it? It is the Canadian Thanksgiving Day (Second Monday of October).
